The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators of Oklahoma will hold a movie fundraiser at Fourth St. Theater in Tuttle on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 pm. The organization will be showing the Charlie Chaplin silent film, “The Kid,” to help raise money for their scholarship fund.
“The Kid” is a 1921 American silent comedy-drama film written by, produced by, directed by, and starring Charlie Chaplin, and features Jackie Coogan as his adopted son and sidekick. This was Chaplin’s first full-length film as a director. It was a huge success, and was the second-highest grossing film of 1921.
In 2011, “The Kid” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Innovating in its combination of comedic and dramatic elements, “The Kid” is widely considered one of the greatest films of the silent era.
Young Jackie Coogan, who plays Chaplin’s son, went on to play Uncle Fester in “The Addams Family” television series.
Tickets to the event at $10 in advance and $12 at the door and is open to the public. Fourth St. Theater is located at 101 SW 4th St. in Tuttle, next to the old downtown water tower.
All proceeds will benefit SCBWI Oklahoma.
